The EU AI Act amendments explained (Part 1)
The EU isn’t backing down on AI regulation; they are just refining the roadmap.
I keep seeing people suggest that the recent amendments to the EU AI Act signal a softening of the stance. In my view, it’s actually the opposite. The core logic remains intact—the EU is doubling down on high-risk oversight while trying to make the “how” more navigable for businesses.
The shift toward pushing back compliance deadlines for high-risk systems (now looking at late 2027/2028) is a pragmatic move, but it’s a trap if we treat it as permission to procrastinate. These dates are moving, but the technical requirements aren’t disappearing. If your governance framework isn’t being built now, you’ll find yourself scrambling when those deadlines hit.
What bothers me slightly is how quickly “proportionality” is being discussed for smaller players. It’s a necessary evolution to keep Europe competitive, but we must ensure that “simplified” doesn’t become synonymous with “unregulated.” We need to protect the innovators without crushing them under a mountain of paperwork.
Is your team already adjusting your roadmap for these new dates, or are you waiting for the final text to land before moving a muscle?
