Open Source AI Gap Map
A new project has mapped the current state of the open-source AI ecosystem.
The “Gap Map” identifies 421 specific products, including software tools, models, and datasets. It organizes these into categories across different layers of the AI stack. However, the map also shows that over 24,000 other artifacts remain uncategorized in what is called the “long tail.”
This presents a significant governance challenge for public sector organizations. When thousands of tools are not indexed or categorized, it is harder to ensure security, compliance, and data privacy. Identifying these hidden tools is a key step for safe and structured AI adoption.
