EU Action Plan on Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence

The European Union has released a new action plan to manage the intersection of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

The plan addresses how AI can both protect and threaten digital systems. It notes that AI helps detect vulnerabilities and protect infrastructure, but it also allows attackers to carry out operations at a faster scale. The new strategy focuses on three goals: promoting safe AI use, reinforcing European cyber resilience, and scaling up AI capabilities. To do this, the Commission will work with the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) to create a blueprint for secure AI access. It will also launch a testing platform for organizations in critical sectors, including health, transport, and public administration.

For public sector leaders and AI practitioners, this provides a clear roadmap for using AI while following existing rules like the AI Act and the NIS2 Directive. The plan encourages the use of AI to find security flaws faster and improve response times. It also supports the development of sovereign AI, which helps European countries maintain control over their technology and data. By bringing together researchers, businesses, and government bodies, the EU aims to make AI a tool for better security rather than a new risk.

How will these new testing platforms change your approach to AI deployment?
