Sovereign cloud is starting to look like an expensive illusion for many European firms.
I keep seeing this pattern: leadership teams are obsessed with “data residency”—the physical location of a server—as if that alone solves the compliance puzzle. It doesn’t. You can move your data to a Frankfurt data center, but if you haven’t solved the identity layer, you haven’t actually secured anything.
What worries me is how we handle agentic AI. We are deploying models that can autonomously schedule workloads and provision resources. If these agents have standing access to production environments without strict, non-human identity governance, it doesn’t matter if the cloud provider is “sovereign.” A compromised credential or an over-privileged AI agent will bypass your geographic safeguards in seconds.
In my view, true sovereignty isn’t a procurement checkbox; it’s a granular control of who (and what) can act on your behalf. We need to stop treating identity as IT plumbing and start treating it as the regulated infrastructure it has become.
Are we spending too much time worrying about where the data sits while ignoring how the “entities” interacting with that data are actually governed?
